Russia to Launch New Drills after Good Results of Previous Ones

Russia’s military launched training exercises on Tuesday for its rocket forces in Siberia amid increased tensions with the West over Moscow’s annexation of Ukraine’s region of Crimea.

wfefwefwefww34r4r33r22A spokesman for Russia’s Strategic Rocket Forces said about 10,000 troops would take part in the March 25 to 29 exercises in western Siberia’s Omsk region and Orenburg in the southern Urals, more than 2,000 kilometres from Russia’s border with Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Russia staged a military exercise involving 8,500 soldiers near its border with Ukraine after the toppling of that country’s pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych amid a popular uprising and violent street clashes.

The results of snap combat readiness drills conducted last month have confirmed that training in the Russian military has improved, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

6343“The intensity and quality of the forces’ training have improved,” Putin said at a ceremony attended by senior commanders.

Putin added the improvement was aided by defense purchases last year, which have equipped the Russian army and navy with modern weapons.

The country’s military budget stands at about 2.5 trillion rubles ($70 billion), making it the world’s third largest behind the US and China.

935138179Last month, Putin ordered snap military drills in Russia’s Western and Central military districts, which border Ukraine. The exercises involved dozens of vessels from the Baltic and Northern Fleets and aircraft of the Russian Air Force.

Moscow said the drills had no relation to the political standoff between Russia and the West over Crimea, an autonomous Ukrainian region with an ethnic Russian majority that joined Russia last week.

Russia is expected to conduct large-scale military exercises in the Eastern Military District in September.

The Defense Ministry said earlier that snap checks are to be conducted on a regular basis to ensure constant combat readiness.

The ministry said in November that government spending on military equipment will increase 25 percent this year, to 1.7 trillion rubles ($52 billion), up from 1.35 trillion rubles last year.

Russia to Conduct Exercises Using Topol Ballistic Missile

Russia’s Western Military District has begun large-scale air defense drills at its southern testing range of Kapustin Yar on the backdrop of further escalation of tensions with the West over Ukraine.

ufofiles-russianroswell-Image9-u2-map1Kapustin Yar, located some 450 kilometers (280 miles) east of the Ukrainian border, will host about 3,500 troops and over 1,000 units of military hardware for about a month. The exercise will culminate with live-firing drills, involving S-300, Buk-M1 and other air defense systems.

“It is for the first time that all air defense units from the district, including coastal defenses of the Northern Fleet, have gathered in one place,” said the district’s spokesman, Col. Oleg Kochetkov.

c4db4258bab40f2f9b9a0b00157038ef“It is the largest-ever exercise held by air defense units of the Western Military District,” Kochetkov said, adding that the drills were part of a regular combat training cycle.

But the basis of the exercise was the launch from Kapustin Yar in Astrakhan region of intercontinental ballistic missile RS-12M “Topol”.

It started at 22.10 Moscow time. And later, the Defense Ministry reported that “a training warhead missile with a given accuracy struck conditional goal at the Sary-Shagan in Kazakhstan.”

-Start was made in order to test promising warheads of intercontinental ballistic missiles, – explained Colonel Igor Yegorov.

The yesterday missile, of course, was not carrying a nuclear warhead. Military mainly tested the behavior in the air and the accuracy with which the target lies on the ground of its new simulator. Externally it is an exact copy of the warhead. The shape, weight and equipment are complete identity of this ammunition. During these launches military and designers are primarily interested in how all this filling obeys commands from the ground, how accurately provides the flight parameters and executes the test program. And finally – how effective during actual use.

s-300-550x288In an official statement the Ministry of Defense said that the launch was made in the interests of the Strategic Missile Forces and the Navy. With the first all is clear: strategic forces are now actively equipping complex “Yars”. In coming years, it must be registered in five divisions. New system was developed based on the “Topol”, but it turned out much more powerful. It is known, for example, that a new munition exceeds RS -12M for throw-weight more than 20 percent. Besides “Yars” carries not one but 3-4 nuclear unit. At the same time designers managed to keep the new range of strategic missiles at more than 10,000 kilometers. Experts argue that the technological solutions guarantee high survivability for ammunition. Objectivity of such an assessment is just confirmed by launches from Kapustin Yar. Especially that combat equipment of “Yars” is constantly improving. As for the Navy, these tests are important from the point of view of the possibilities of a new strategic submarines “Bulava -30”. Prospective warheads for its missiles can also be checked using the “Topol”.

Complex RS-12M “Topol” was developed at the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology. It has a three-stage solid intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with decoys. Thus “Topol” is highly survivable due to its maneuverability, stealth and small-time preparation for launch. Maximum range of missiles – 10,500 kilometers, starting weight – 45 tons.

First Regiment of “Topols” entered on duty July 23, 1985. Now this upgraded missile system is the basis of the SMF grouping.

Russia to Create New MiG-41based on MiG-31

Speed of the new Russian fighter-interceptor MiG -41, developed on the basis of the MiG-31, exceed Mach 4, said test pilot Anatoly Kvochur.

MIG-41_Foxglove“This upgrade was to take place just 20 years ago. However, this did not happen, so now demands increased. It includes the increasing speed of interceptor to Mach 4-4.3,” said Kvochur.

He commented on the State Duma deputy Alexander Tarnaev message that Russia develops a new fighter, the MiG -41 on the basis of heavy fighter – interceptor MiG-31, the speed of which was 2.8 Mach.

For comparison: the strategic supersonic reconnaissance USAF Lockheed SR- 71 can reach speed of Mach 3.2.

Tarnaev said at a meeting of aerospace defense experts that the Chief of Staff signed an order of deep modernization of Soviet fighter- interceptor MiG-31.

Fighter-interceptor MiG-31 was developed in the USSR in the first half of the 1970s. The aircraft is capable of speed up to three thousand km/h, and its combat radius is 720 km.

MiG-31 is designed to intercept and destroy airborne targets at extremely low, low, medium and high altitudes, day and night, in adverse weather conditions, during the application of active and passive enemy radar jammers, as well as false heat targets. Originally it was intended to intercept cruise missiles at all altitudes and speeds, as well as low-flying satellites.

1Aircraft is armed with six-barreled 23 mm gun with 260 rounds, and is equipped with six suspension points for missiles “air-air” of various types. A group of four MiG- 31, depending on the version can control the air space over the front length of 900-1200 km. Upgraded MiG-31BM can detect targets at ranges of up to 320 km and hit them, closer to 280 km.

Total number of different versions of MiG-31 in the Air Force of Russia is about 190 units. Production of interceptors was discontinued in 1994, but only recently started upgrading these aircraft to the MiG- 31BM version.
