The Ministries of Defense of Argentina and Russia are negotiating for the acquisition of four Navy Russian multipurpose transport ships for the Argentine Navy. The Argentine Defense Ministry plans to use the ships for logistic support of the Argentine polar station in Antarctica, as well as for patrol of the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean.

The negotiations deal with the acquisition of the ships “Tumcha”, “Neftegaz-51”, “Neftegaz-57” and “Neftegaz-61.” According to some statements, the vehicles will cost $ 50 million, but defense officials say that the price is much lower.

Argentina intends to replace old American tugs WWI with new ships to provide patrols in the South Atlantic and the areas adjacent to the South Pole.
