The surprise check of the Russian Armed Forces was completed on Saturday afternoon in the Arctic region; the troops were instructed to return to the places of their permanent deployment. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the exercise was a success and demonstrated readiness of the Northern Fleet to ensure security of the Russian borders.
The Defense Ministry points out that the purpose of such checks, which will be conducted in the future, is to improve the control mechanisms over the Armed Forces. Russian servicemen promised to invite their Western counterparts to future checks in order for foreign experts to be able to see the purely defensive nature of these exercises.
Over the recent weeks the Russian Armed Forces launched military exercises in different parts of the country. 3,500 exercises of different levels are held in the country annually, along with several major surprise checks.
