Six patrol vessels will be built for the Russian Navy until 2020, two ice class patrol ships will also be constructed, Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov told reporters at the ceremony honoring the best graduates of naval educational institutions in St. Petersburg.
The first of the six patrol ships will be built within three years, said the admiral. They will have a small crew, that is why the issue of crew change at any port has been worked out. The possibility of dock inspections in some foreign ports is also envisaged, said Chirkov.
“These ships are able to accompany civilian vessels in the areas of pirate activity, to ensure combat stability in the near maritime zone, to protect deployment sites and to operate in the far sea zone as part of groups,” – said the commander in chief of the Russian Navy.
